The one thing to know before you come: In Ohio, vehicle titles are issued by the County Clerk of Courts, not the BMV. The Akron BMV handles registration, plates, and driver license or ID. Bring the right documents the first time
Showing up prepared is the difference between one trip and two. Here is the short version for the most common visits. Each task page has the full checklist.
Renewal Plates & registration
- Your renewal notice or current registration
- Proof of insurance
- A current e-check if your vehicle needs one
- Payment for the fee (see fees below)
Federal REAL ID
- Proof of full legal name and date of birth
- Proof of legal presence
- Your Social Security number
- Two proofs of Ohio address from different sources
License Driver license or state ID
- Verification of your identity
- Proof of your current address
- First-time issuance needs full identity documents
- Name-change documents if your name differs
Title Title work (at the Clerk)
- The title and any lien release
- Title the vehicle at the County Clerk of Courts
- Then register it (plates and sticker) here
- Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN inspection
