Before you come

What to bring

Showing up with the right paperwork is the difference between one trip and two. The documents you need depend on the transaction.

Plate or registration renewal

  • Your renewal notice or current registration
  • Proof of insurance
  • Acceptable payment for fees due

Driver license or state ID renewal

  • Verification of your identity
  • Verification of your Ohio address
  • First-time issuance needs full identity documents

REAL ID

  • Proof of full legal name and date of birth
  • Proof of legal presence and Social Security number
  • Two proofs of Ohio address from different sources

Title work

  • Title and any lien release
  • Title at the County Clerk of Courts first
  • Then register and get plates here

A note on titles: In Ohio, vehicle titles are issued by the County Clerk of Courts, not the BMV. The Akron BMV handles registration, plates, and driver license or ID. You title a vehicle at the Summit County Clerk of Courts, then register it (plates and sticker) here. See title transfer for the full process.
