Deputy Registrar Agency 7731 · 688 Wolf Ledges Parkway

Title at the Clerk. Get your plates here.

Buying a car in Ohio trips a lot of people up. You title the vehicle at the County Clerk of Courts, then register it for plates at the BMV. We will walk you through it, and handle the BMV half.

An official Ohio BMV deputy registrar operated by NOADA. Open weekdays and Saturday mornings [VERIFY], with free on-site parking.

The part everyone gets wrong

From clerk to plate: how buying a car works in Ohio

Scroll through the four stops, or step through them with the controls. Every step is shown below in full, so you can read the whole process without scrolling.

Step 1 of 4
1 Stop one

You buy the vehicle

From a dealer or a private seller. The seller signs the title over to you. A dealer often starts some of the paperwork for you, but the title still has to be issued in your name at the next stop.

Who: you and the seller

2 Stop two

Title it at the County Clerk of Courts

This is the step people miss. In Ohio the title is issued by the County Clerk of Courts, not the BMV. Bring the signed title (and any lien release) to the Summit County Clerk of Courts title office. A vehicle coming from another state needs an out-of-state VIN inspection first.
